You’re Not Behind: A Gentler Way to Set Goals This Year

By the time you’re reading this, we’re already at the tail end of January, and if you’ve felt a quiet (or not-so-quiet) pressure to have everything figured out by now; your goals mapped, your plans locked-in, your new and improved self fully activated, I want you to pause for a moment... Because that pressure is exhausting and for many of us, it’s counterproductive.

Here is my alternative take on new years' resolutions...

There’s an unspoken expectation that the start of January is some kind of magical deadline: decide everything all at once, set big goals with airtight plans, and instantly become a different version of yourself.

But for me, that approach has never felt supportive or sustainable. In fact, rushing into goal-setting often pulls me further away from what I actually want. It spikes my cortisol, fuels comparison, and turns something that could feel intentional into something that feels heavy and forced.

Just like the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race…

What I’ve learned over time is this: clarity doesn’t come from urgency, it comes from presence.

Rather than asking yourself to map the entire year in the first few days of January, what if you allowed the month to be a landing month… a time to notice. A time to reflect on what the last year revealed, not just what you achieved, but how you felt while living it. Only once that settles does it feel natural to ask gentler, more honest questions:

  • What do I want more of this year, emotionally, mentally, physically?

  • What felt draining last year that I don’t want to carry forward?

  • What would “success” actually feel like in my body, not just on paper?

Goals that support your nervous system

When goals are set from a regulated, grounded place, they tend to look different. They’re less about proving something and more about supporting yourself, less about speed and more about alignment. This doesn’t mean you’re aiming lower, it means you’re aiming truer.

You’re choosing goals that your nervous system can stay on board with. Goals that leave room for rest, flexibility, and being human.

If you’re still figuring it out … you’re right on time!

If January is nearly over and you’re still not crystal clear on your plans for the year ; let me say this... You haven’t missed anything. You are not behind and you don’t need to rush to catch up!

Some of the most meaningful shifts begin quietly, after the noise dies down, after the comparison fades and you give yourself permission to move at your own pace. So if you’re setting intentions now (or even next month) trust that timing. A calmer, clearer year doesn’t start with pressure. It starts with listening, and that is always available to you… no matter the date on the calendar.

If you’d like to use creativity to support your goal and intention setting this year, or simply want to try something imaginative and grounding while meeting new people, you’re very welcome to explore my creative wellness workshops in picturesque Kinsale.
